Odd Size Racks
We just received some 28” and 44” deep uprights today. It is a reminder that while there are more common sizes out there, racking uprights can come in any depth and height (and let’s not get started on varying beam dimensions!). It takes our full team to sort, organize, tag, and store our used warehouse.
The most common depths for uprights in the US are 42” and 48”; the 42” depth is great for standard pallets that measure 40” W x 48” H. Wait- does that math add up? Yes, because the pallet is deeper than the racks, the pallet itself rests on the beams. This means the full weight is directly transferred to the racking and provides the greatest stability. This also gives material handlers more flexibility when placing pallets onto the racks
What are some crazy depth racking that we have seen? We once bought a warehouse full of 18” deep racks from an auto parts dealer. They were mainly used to store care tires. We eventually found homes for these used racks in various locations, including a window glass manufacturer!
This goes to show that there are many uses for racks our there and that even odd size pallet racking find a purpose- with or without pallets!
